Mark & Andrew Madoff
Mark Madoff, the older of the two sons that Bernard Madoff had, was born in 1964. Andrew Madoff, his younger brother, was born two years later, in 1966.
Both of Madoff’s children have started working at the company since they were in their 20’s. Their job was to supervise the desks that dealt with stock trading. Their department was not involved in the part of the company that was responsible for the fraud. The investigators have looked into their involvement with the fraud, but didn’t find any evidence that they participated or that they knew what was going on. At the time when the scandal started, Mark was 44 years old and Andrew was 42 years old.
They had a nice lifestyle, having plenty of multi million dollar properties, including apartments in Manhattan. According to their friends, Mark and Andrew are passionate about their kids, their family, fly-fishing and baseball. Mark went through a divorce and later married again, while Andrew battled with mantle-cell lymphoma and won, returning to work soon after that.
On December 9th, 2008, Madoff told Mark that he wanted to pay bonuses to employees two months earlier than planned, in a total of $173 million. The next day, Mark and Andrew asked their father how could he afford the bonuses, when the company had problems paying its clients. Madoff then told his sons that he lied all this time and that his entire business was a fraud, a huge Ponzi scheme.
Their attorney said that once they found out the truth, Mark and Andrew went to the federal authorities and on December 11th Bernard Madoff was arrested and charged with securities fraud.
Articles on the two brothers showed that during the trial they were both angry and haven’t visited their father in jail, avoiding all contact with him.
